Powers of Attorney

Plan now, protect yourself later!

Powers of attorney documents appoint a loved one you trust as an agent to take care of your affairs in the event that you are unable. Agents appointed by the Powers of attorney documents can help make financial, medical, and legal decisions, depending on your choices as the principal.

In short, appointing a power of attorney is a safety net to ensure your real wishes are upheld on your behalf.

There are five main types of powers of attorney:

  • General Power of Attorney – Allows an agent the power of attorney over a principal’s affairs (financial, legal, etc.)

  • Durable Power of Attorney – Allows an agent the power of attorney in the event and extension of the principal’s incapacitation

  • Limited Power of Attorney – Allows a principal to limit what a chosen agent is allowed to do on the principal’s behalf

  • Springing Power of Attorney – Allows an agent to receive powers of attorney during a certain set of circumstances/specific situation (i.e. in the case of incapacitation)

  • Medical Power of Attorney – Allows an agent to make decisions regarding health on the principal’s behalf
